This is a question I have been asking myself for several years now.
And one that many people seek to answer for themselves.
In fact a quick google search shows 244,000,000 results, so it seems to be a question that is answered or discussed on a monumental scale.
In this post, I’m going to share a few resources and insightful findings that have helped me understand this complex concept.
What is Ego Explained by Gary van Warmerdam
Here’s how Wikipedia explains what the ego is which is titled “Self” –
The self is an individual person as the object of his or her own reflective consciousness. This reference is necessarily subjective, thus self is a reference by a subject to the same subject. The sense of having a self—or self-hood—should, however, not be confused with subjectivity itself.Wikipedia
I think a good way of understanding the ego is to learn other words to describe it, such as personality, character, psyche or self as outlined on Thesaurus.com.
It’s also interesting to note that thesaurus also mentions the words, arrogance, inner-man and narcissism.
Mind vs Body vs Spirit vs Soul
Asking such question as “what is the ego?” or “who or what am I?” can often lead to other philosophical and worldly questions.
You may find yourself discovering more esteric subjects like spirituality. In my own experience, this has only lead me to grasp these concepts on a fairly complex level.
If I hadn’t delved into spirituality, I would have anywhere near as much of an understanding as I do now.
